September Safety Tips in the Community

Your neighborhood and community are among the best places to be, whether out and walking the dog or at home relaxing with a hot cup of cocoa! As part of national September Safety Awareness, here are some safety tips to consider, whether you’re at home, heading out for a long trip, or returning home from a typical workday:

1 .Plan and know your route before you leave home. Take well-lit, busy streets and be alert to your surroundings. Park your car in a spot with adequate lighting, and don’t forget to lock it! Be sure to let a friend or family member know when you’re heading out and how long you’ll be gone.

2. Always keep your phone charged and on you in case of an emergency.

3. When walking your dog, consider investing in reflective vests for you and your dog. That way, drivers can easily see you at night, dusk, and dawn. Remember that local laws generally require dogs to be leashed. Also, be sure your dog’s collar is up-to-date with the proper identification tags.

4. When returning home, always be aware of your surroundings. If you see anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to call 911. In addition, have your key ready as you approach your front door.

5. Be sure to get to know your neighbors. Not only is it a great way to expand your sphere of influence, it’s also a great safety network. When you’re out of town, you can ask trusted neighbors to keep an eye on your house, water the plants, or walk the dog.

6. Always make sure that all locks, door frames, and window frames are secure. A household security system or simple cameras are also a great investment for additional security.

7. Keep the house locked, even if you are at home. Be cautious about opening the door to unknown visitors; verify the identity of contractors and utility workers. Using timer switches for lights when you are at work or out-of-town gives the impression that someone is home.

8. Last but not least, keep your property well lit and clear of debris, be it fallen branches or toys scattered across the yard. This not only keeps you and your family safe, but reflects your care for the community and your neighbors.
